Hard Work Pays Off in Your Interior Design Business
If only what we do as designers was easier, right? Too many of us search for a magic bullet in our businesses. We want that social media post to magically bring us hundreds of fabulous new clients! We want to have money just roll in without any headaches. We want to have all the fun in our jobs and none of the stresses. But you also know that a magic bullet isn’t reality!
Owning your own business is HARD WORK. It takes a lot of our time and effort – there isn’t an easy way out. We have to put our heads down and get the job done. There’s no wand you can wave to make it all happen without hard work. (Wouldn’t that be great?!)
BUT – there are things you can do to make your job easier! Here are some of my best tips for getting more done in the same number of hours:
1. You have to have systems and procedures.
Setting up your timelines, getting budget worksheets pulled together, and having standard operating procedures for your processes is going to make your job so much easier! If you have to reinvent the wheel with every single project you take on, you’re making your job even harder. If you don’t already have those processes in place, my Return on Interiors system can help!
2. Make your To Do lists work for you.
Here’s what I do: I write down everything I think I “HAVE” to do. Then I determine if everything on the list REALLY is what I have to do. Then I put the must-do actionable items in my calendar – THAT VERY MINUTE! Everything else either gets delegated/outsourced, or it gets deleted from my list. Period! Here’s the exact To Do list I use…
3. Get rid of distractions.
How many times have you scrambled at the end of a deadline and wondered where the time went? I bet that if you’re really honest with yourself, you’ll see that you probably didn’t spend all of your working hours actually working. It happens – we all get distracted! But you can keep that from happening by closing Facebook on your computer, turning off your phone, and checking email just once or twice a day. Your project is more important than that cute puppy video!
4. Get help when you need it!
There are SO many outsourcing companies and virtual assistants out there now. They can help with CAD, social media, accounting, and so much more. Don’t waste your time doing things that aren’t in your sweet spot!
You really can get more done if you’re organized. And I can help with that – download my FREE T0-Do List that helps you prioritize your tasks! Use it to make that hard work pay off for you!
