Don’t Quit

Filed under Business Goals, Clients, Return on Interiors

As I was building my design business (heck, even sometimes today!), there were days I was just ready to shut it down. Throw in the towel. Fire myself and say, “I quit!”

During those low times, it’s easy to lose sight of why you started your business in the first place and begin to doubt if YOU have what it takes to create a thriving interior design business.

Listen carefully. You absolutely DO have what it takes. Don’t quit!

You are not alone. Every CEO, business owner and entrepreneur goes through similar valleys on their journey—even your fellow design professionals have. What keeps them all going and how you can overcome this feeling to quit is perseverance. Even when:

  • You make a big mistake—because you only measured once!
  • Someone else made a mistake, but you have to make it right, so you don’t let your client down.
  • Vendors don’t deliver when they say they will and your client is HOT (and not the good-looking kind of hot!)
  • Clients are paying late, even though they know you’re a solopreneur.
  • There’s nothing flowing in your cash flow.
  • Remodels seem to be the only thing people want to hire you for, but you lack knowledge.

If this doesn’t sound like you TODAY because you’re on top of the world, believe me, you will want to quit AGAIN! It happens to us all from time to time.

Here are a few things that I do when that feeling to quit overcomes me:

Look back at how far I’ve come

When I’m overcome with a desire to quit, I force myself to pause and reflect on just how far I’ve come. It doesn’t take long before I realize that I’ve experienced this feeling before, and then I can quickly pivot to all the positive and success I’ve achieved to get me moving forward again and climb out of the valley.

Change (and highs and lows) are constant

Once I recognized that highs and low are part of our business, it’s helped me keep motivated even on the bad days. Embrace the good times, but learn and get better from the bad times. Change is the only constant in life and the sooner you start to roll with the ups and downs, the better off you’ll be.

Gain inspiration from others

Sometimes I read (or listen to) stories of other entrepreneurs to change my perspective and to help me recognize that even the most successful people have felt like failures from time to time.

Don’t Quit

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,

When the road you’re trudging seems all uphill,

When the funds are low and the debts are high,

And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,

When care is pressing you down a bit,

Rest, if you must, but don’t you quit.

Life is queer with its twists and turns,

As every one of us sometimes learns,

And many a failure turns about,

When he might have won had he stuck it out;

Don’t give up though the pace seems slow–

You may succeed with another blow.

Often the goal is nearer than

It seems to a faint and faltering man,

Often the struggler has given up,

When he might have captured the victor’s cup,

And he learned too late when the night slipped down,

How close he was to the golden crown.

Success is failure turned inside out–

The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,

And you never can tell how close you are,

It may be near when it seems so far,

So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit–

It’s when things seem worst that you mustn’t quit.
